The game crashes at different intervals. It crashes upon the character being attacked by Mirelurk, upon leaving Megaton, while entering a new area, upon breaking a Raiders guard, texture crashing, and so on.
Add to DEP Exception
Using sysdm.cpl command in Run dialog box, open the System Properties dialog > Advanced tab > Settings (under Performance frame) > Data Execution Prevention tab. Add the Fallout 3 executable files to be excluded from the DEP security. The file path is given below:
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Fallout 3
Your file path shouldn’t necessarily be the same. It may vary depending on where you installed the game.
Change Game Configs
Open the file Fallout.ini located in the Documents library under Fallout 3 subfolder in My Games folder. After opening up it in Notepad or any other text editor, choose to enable using threaded AI. As default, it is set to “0” (zero; without quotes) to be disabled. Enable it by replacing its value with “1” (without quotes). So, it’ll look like:
- bUseThreadedAI=1
Be sure to save up the changes.
Change No of Processors
Your system may be configured to run with two core processors. Prevent Fallout 3 crashes by setting only one core processor from the Processor Affinity dialog box. Set affinity of the Fallout 3 process from Details tab of the Task Manager.
Skip Intro Screen
The intro screen contains a video that is showed at the beginning. If you’re encountering Fallout 3 crashes during intro screen, just skip it. In the game installation location, you find a file named “Fallout Intro VSK.bik under ..\Data\Video folders. Just delete that file, and it shall skip the introduction screen.
Disable Games for Windows Live
First of all, move your saved games stored in a folder named with your User ID to the Saves folder. Move all files from Source folder to Target directory.
Source Folder:
- C:\Users\<Your User Name>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves\<Your User ID>
Destination:
- C:\Users\<Your User Name>\Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Saves\
That is, we moved all files to the root directory.
Change Display Resolution Configs
Enable support for multi-monitor displays by configuring Fallout.ini file settings. Set “15” (without quotes) value to “iSafeZoneXWide” and “iSafeZoneYWide” and “iSafeZoneX” respectively. All of them should be in below formats:
- iSafeZoneXWide=15
- iSafeZoneYWide=15
- iSafeZoneX=15
Change FOV Value based on Aspect Ratio
In the Fallout.ini file you’ve [Display] section. Set appropriate FOV Values depending on your Aspect Ratio. Clipping can be prevented using lower values.
- fDefaultWorldFOV=75.0000
- fDefault1stPersonFOV=55.0000
