Mega Insufficient Transfer Quota

Have you ever wanted to download some large files from but the transfer quota is too low and insufficient to download your files? has its own file download and transfer limits, much below those offered by popular file sharing websites. The file transfer quota is too low for an average user to download their required files. While downloading files, you often get stuck as your monthly download quota reaches its limits within a few hours, and you’re required to either purchase their subscription or wait until the next month. Of course, waiting for another month, is not even an option if you’re stuck in the middle of downloading a large file. Also, if you don’t use quite often, you may really don’t want to pay for their subscriptions. So, what are your options? Read on…

What is Mega? or just Mega, is a file sharing website that claims to have over 60 million users across the world. Mega can be accessible through a mobile app, Desktop application or straight from your Web browser. Mega is often criticized for its highly restrictive and unusable free plan. Free users have a fixed bandwidth quota to download their files. Once you’ve exceeded the quota, you will be suspended from downloading any further regardless of whether you’re downloading multiple small files or one single file.

Bypassing Mega Insufficient Transfer Quota

There are ways by which you can acquire additional transfer quota, for free, with little efforts. We’ll discuss both the official and unofficial ways.

1. Add Mobile Number to Your Account

Adding a mobile number to your Mega account will increase your storage by 20 GB and bandwidth limits by 40 GB. Verifying your mobile number will further increase the limits by 40 GB. If you want to use their services only once, you may unsubscribe later.

2. Download Desktop & Android Apps

Another way to increase your download and transfer quota is to download Mega’s desktop application and mobile app. Installing the mobile app will add additional quota of 30 GB, whereas the desktop application will increase it by 40 GB. It’s recommended to install both for obtaining a combined transfer quota of 70 GB. (You may uninstall these applications later)

The desktop application is available for Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. After downloading the application, you’ll need to sign in to your Mega account.

The mobile app is available for both Android and iOS-based devices. To install it, visit the Google Play Store or App Store (depending on your device), and search for “Mega”. Look for the official app published by Mega Ltd.

3. Use a VPN Service

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) help you mask your real IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) and browse the Internet anonymously. VPN establishes an encrypted connection to protect user’s online privacy and activity. It establishes a tunnel between your local network and exit node and encrypts the plain data into ciphertext.  Ciphertext is used to describe the text transformed into an unreadable condition from the plain text.

Using VPN will allow you to mask your real IP Address while using Mega. You can continue downloading files even after your free daily quota has expired. Keep in mind, this hack won’t work if you’re in the middle of downloading a large file sizing a few GBs. You’re out of luck unless you want to download multiple smaller files (for example, 10-20 files sizing 400 MB each).

Another drawback is the speed factor. If you’re using a free VPN, your download speed is throttled to a few MBs or sometimes KBs. It can take a lot of time to download your files. Using a paid VPN will help you download your files faster, without speed limitations.

4. Download Your Files Using JDownloader

JDownloader is a Java-based download manager software that facilitates simultaneous download of multiple files from multiple sources. JDownloader is free-of-cost. It is a multi-platform software available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

  1. Download and install JDownloader.
  2. Copy the path to your file on the Mega website.
  3. Go to the Connection Manager in the JDownloader.
  4. Paste the link to your file.
  5. Make sure to set the Max chunks per download to only 20.
  6. Set the Max simultaneous download to 5.
  7. Start the download.

5. Purchase a Subscription Plan

If your download file is too large in size, you may want to subscribe for a premium plan to increase the transfer quota.

The lowest plan starts from €4.99 which provides a total of 400 GB of storage space and 1 TB of bandwidth. It is sufficient if you’re an average user. Other Mega plans offer from 2 TB to 16 TB of bandwidth.
